Astoria Nightlife: The Beer Garden, the Tavernas, and the Three Bars That Run to 4am

Astoria has the oldest beer garden in New York City, a genuine Greek taverna row, a barbecue hall with its own Jumbotron — and a late-night scene far smaller than its reputation. Here is what is open in 2026, what it charges, and the Monday closures that catch people out.

Best for: Beer gardens, Greek dinner, cheap roundsPeak: Thu–Sat 7pm–1amWeak spot: Closes early; Mondays are dead

Astoria is a real nightlife destination and a badly described one. What it genuinely has is the best beer garden in New York, a dense row of Greek tavernas that stay social late into dinner, a serious barbecue hall, and one of the city's better comedy rooms. What it does not have is a broad late-night bar district. Only three venues on this page publish a 4am close. Most of the neighborhood's Greek restaurants stop serving between 10 and 11pm, and after that your options narrow sharply — to a handful of bars, not a district.

That shape should drive your plan. Astoria rewards an early, long, food-led evening. It punishes people who arrive at 11pm expecting Williamsburg. And it punishes Monday arrivals hardest of all: both the neighborhood's two biggest draws, Bohemian Hall and Pig Beach, are closed on Mondays. That single fact is missing from almost every Astoria listicle, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

The rough geography: 30th Avenue and Broadway between 31st and 36th Streets is the bar-and-restaurant spine and where the late licences sit. 23rd and 24th Avenues up in Ditmars hold the beer garden, the comedy room and the northern bars. Ditmars Boulevard out toward Steinway is taverna country. 36th Street down near 35th Avenue is the museum-and-barbecue corner, and it is a genuine walk from everything else. For the wider map see the Queens nightlife guide, neighbouring Long Island City and Jackson Heights, or the neighborhoods hub.

Street life and nightlife corridor in Astoria, Queens

Bohemian Hall: the anchor, and the Monday problem

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden at 29-19 24th Avenue is the reason Astoria is on anyone's nightlife map. It bills itself as New York City's oldest beer garden, established in 1910, and it is not a themed reconstruction — it is a Czech-Slovak community hall with a vast tree-shaded yard behind it and long communal tables that force you to sit with strangers.

The operational detail that matters more than any description: it is closed on Mondays, when the space is given over to private events. Published hours are Tuesday to Thursday 5pm–12am, Friday 3pm–12am, Saturday 12pm–1am and Sunday 12pm–10pm. Note the Sunday close — 10pm, earlier than most people assume for a beer garden.

It publishes no drink prices on its site, and we are not going to invent any. Any specific per-litre figure you find on an aggregator was typed in by a third party and may be years old. Budget it like a generous pub night and you will not be surprised.

Pig Beach BBQ Queens (35-37 36th Street) is the other big-format room and it is also closed on Mondays. It runs Tuesday to Thursday with the kitchen to 9pm and the bar to 10pm, and Friday to Sunday from noon to around 10pm. It publishes actual menu prices — ribs $25, brisket $21, pulled pork $11 — with happy hour Tuesday to Friday 3–6pm, karaoke Wednesday at 7pm and trivia Thursday at 7pm. It is a 28,000-square-foot space with a backyard beer garden, a live-music stage and a Jumbotron, which makes it the closest thing Astoria has to a large-format night out.

One correction worth carrying: this is not the Brooklyn Pig Beach. The original Gowanus location is gone — it no longer appears anywhere on the company's own list of locations, which now shows only Queens, Boston and West Palm Beach. If a guide sends you to Gowanus for Pig Beach, it is out of date.

The taverna row, and when the kitchens actually stop

Astoria's Greek restaurants are the neighborhood's genuine claim to being a destination, and the single most useful thing to know about them is the clock. These are dinner rooms, not late-night rooms. Plan to sit down by 8pm.

Taverna Kyclades at 36-01 Ditmars Boulevard is the famous one — the fish taverna out toward Steinway that people cross boroughs for, and historically a no-reservations queue. Bahari Estiatorio (31-14 Broadway) is the other pillar, closer to the subway and easier to get into. Anassa Taverna has an Astoria location at 28-10 Astoria Boulevard — worth stating plainly, because the brand's best-known room is on East 60th Street in Manhattan and lists routinely confuse the two.

Beyond the Greek rooms, Vesta Trattoria & Wine Bar (21-02 30th Avenue) is the reliable Italian wine-led option, serving dinner from 5pm to 10pm most nights and to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, with weekend brunch from noon. Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana (36-08 Ditmars Boulevard) runs noon to 11pm Friday and Saturday and noon to 10pm Sunday through Thursday. Mar's (34-21 34th Avenue) is the small, well-regarded modern room down toward the museum end — note the apostrophe; it is styled Mar's, not Mars.

The bars, and the three that actually run to 4am

New York law permits a 4am last call. In Astoria, only three venues on this page publish one, and knowing which three is the difference between a good late night and a walk home at midnight.

Sweet Afton (30-09 34th Street) is the best all-rounder and the one that publishes the most numbers: its burger is $20, cocktails run $14–16 and drafts $7–9. Judy & Punch (34-08 30th Avenue) is the cheaper late option, with cocktails at $13 and wine at $8. Madam Marie's (35-15 Broadway) is the third, and carries one practical warning: it enforces a $15 card minimum, so bring cash for a single round.

The rest of the bar list closes earlier but is worth the walk. The Bonnie (29-12 23rd Avenue) and Mosaic (25-19 24th Avenue) sit up in Ditmars near the beer garden, which makes them the natural second stop after Bohemian Hall. LetLove Inn (27-20 23rd Avenue) is on the same stretch — note that its old website no longer loads, so find it on Instagram rather than following a stale link. Diamond Dogs (34-04 31st Avenue) is the western outlier, closer to the 30th Avenue station.

Q.E.D. Astoria (27-16 23rd Avenue) deserves its own line. It describes itself as the only woman-owned and operated independent arts space in Queens, was voted the top comedy venue in New York by Time Out readers, and runs more than 100 events a month — comedy, storytelling, workshops, screenings. It publishes no standard ticket price; every show is priced separately on its calendar. It is the single best reason to be in Ditmars on a weeknight. The honest downsides

Stale listings: what we removed, and what closed elsewhere

We are not publishing a list of recently closed Astoria venues, because we could not find dated, sourced closure reporting for this neighborhood in this verification cycle. Guessing would be worse than saying nothing. What we can tell you is what we removed from our own previous version of this page, and why — because those same names still circulate on other Astoria lists.

Astoria nightlife spots, verified open

Operating status and street addresses for every venue below were checked on 2026-08-26. Six venues from our previous version were removed rather than carried over — see the section above.

Bars & late rooms

Tavernas & dining-led nights

Beer gardens, comedy & culture

Removed since our last update: Astoria Music Collective (no evidence it exists), SingleCut Beersmiths, Kaufman Astoria Studios (a production lot, not a public venue), Sek'end Sun, Aliada and Amylos Taverna (all unverifiable this cycle). We would rather list fewer venues than send you to a closed door.

FAQ

What is Astoria known for at night?

Beer gardens and Greek tavernas, not clubs. Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden at 29-19 24th Avenue bills itself as New York City's oldest beer garden, established in 1910, and it is the neighborhood's anchor. Around it sits a dense row of Greek fish tavernas, a large barbecue hall with its own backyard and Jumbotron at Pig Beach, and Q.E.D., an independent arts and comedy space running more than 100 events a month. What Astoria does not have is a nightclub or a dance floor of any kind.

Is Bohemian Hall open on Mondays?

No. Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden is closed on Mondays, when the space is used for private events. Its published hours are Tuesday to Thursday 5pm to 12am, Friday 3pm to 12am, Saturday 12pm to 1am and Sunday 12pm to 10pm. Pig Beach BBQ Queens is also closed on Mondays. Since these are the two largest rooms in the neighborhood, a Monday night in Astoria is a genuinely thin proposition and most guides fail to mention it.

How late do Astoria bars stay open?

Less late than the neighborhood's reputation suggests. Only three venues on this page publish a 4am close: Sweet Afton at 30-09 34th Street, Judy & Punch at 34-08 30th Avenue, and Madam Marie's at 35-15 Broadway. Most of Astoria's Greek restaurants stop serving between 10 and 11pm, and the beer garden shuts at midnight on weeknights. Astoria rewards an early, long, food-led evening rather than a late improvised one.

How do you get to and from Astoria late at night?

Take the N, and do not rely on the W. The N runs 24 hours and serves the Astoria stops along 31st Street, including Astoria–Ditmars Boulevard, Astoria Boulevard, 30th Avenue and Broadway. The W does not run late nights or weekends at all, so anyone building a Saturday night around it is planning around a train that is not running. Also budget for the walk: Pig Beach and the Museum of the Moving Image sit near 35th Avenue, more than twenty minutes on foot from Bohemian Hall and Q.E.D. up on 23rd and 24th Avenues.

Is Pig Beach in Astoria the same as the Brooklyn one?

No, and this catches people out. The original Pig Beach in Gowanus, Brooklyn is closed and no longer appears anywhere on the company's own list of locations, which now shows only Queens, Boston and West Palm Beach. The Astoria location is at 35-37 36th Street, Queens, NY 11106, it is closed on Mondays, and it publishes menu prices including ribs at $25, brisket at $21 and pulled pork at $11. If a guide sends you to Gowanus for Pig Beach, it is out of date.

Operating status, addresses, hours and prices below were checked on 2026-08-26. Every dollar figure on this page comes from the venue's own site or menu; where a venue publishes nothing, we say so rather than estimating. Street addresses were cross-checked against OpenStreetMap's address data to catch errors in Queens' hyphenated numbering.
