Nyla: NYC Nightlife Concierge — How She Works

Nyla (formerly "NYBot") is the concierge chat you'll find in the bottom-right corner of every page on NY Nightlife. This page explains what she knows, how she decides what to tell you, and where her limits are — because an honest tool should show its wiring.

What she knows

Two data sources, both published on this site and nothing else:

• The venue facts file — the same dataset behind our 30 venue fact pages. For each venue it holds the cover charge, dress code, age policy, hours, table/bottle policy, peak times, a step-by-step "how to get in," and an honest verdict. Every entry carries a "last verified" date so you can judge freshness yourself.
• The tonight feed — a daily-updated list of what's on, powering the Tonight page.

Questions she's good at

• "What's the cover at 230 Fifth?" — exact published policy, quoted from the dated data.
• "Which rooftops are free?" — she compares cover fields across all rooftop venues.
• "Is Marquee strict at the door?" — dress and door policy, flagged as official or reported.
• "What's happening tonight?" — straight from the daily feed.
• "Cheap night out?" — venues with low or no cover, plus the under-$50 ranking.
• "Where should I start for a weekend plan?" — she'll route you to the weekend hub and the night planner.

How she avoids making things up

Nyla is deliberately rules-based rather than free-wheeling: she matches your question against the site's data and quotes what's there. When a fact is "reported" rather than officially published by a venue, our data labels it that way and Nyla passes the label through. When she has no data — a venue we don't cover, a date beyond the feed — she says so instead of improvising. That mirrors the site-wide sourcing rules in our editorial policy.
