Neighborhood Guide
Chelsea Nightlife: Gallery Bars, Rooftop Clubs and What It Actually Costs
Chelsea is two nightlife neighborhoods stacked on the same grid — quiet, expensive cocktail rooms in the gallery blocks west of Ninth Avenue, and Manhattan's biggest club lane a few streets north. This guide names the rooms that are open in 2026, what they charge, and where the neighborhood lets you down.
Most Chelsea guides tell you to "pick a lane" and leave it there. Here is the more useful version: Chelsea's nightlife sits in three tight clusters that barely talk to each other. The gallery district — roughly West 18th to West 27th Streets between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues — empties out by 8pm on most nights and holds two or three genuinely good cocktail rooms. The Chelsea Market / High Line corridor is an early-evening product that shuts at 10pm. And the club lane along Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the high 20s does not really start until 11pm. Trying to do all three in one night is the single most common Chelsea mistake, because there is very little walk-in bar density between them to absorb a failed plan.
If you want the wider Manhattan picture first, start with the Manhattan nightlife by zone guide, or browse every district from the neighborhoods hub. If you already know you want a club, price it honestly with the cover charge calculator before you commit.

Which Chelsea night are you having?
| The night | Where it happens | Realistic cost per person | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gallery hop then cocktails | West 18th–27th between 10th & 11th Ave, then Porchlight or Bathtub Gin | Galleries free; cocktails high teens to low $20s, no cover | Thu openings 6–8pm, then 8pm onward |
| Dinner-led evening | Cookshop, Shukette, Buddakan | $80–150 with drinks; reserve ahead | Seatings from 5–5:30pm; kitchens close 10–11pm |
| Big-room club night | Marquee, PHD Rooftop, Somewhere Nowhere | $150–300+ — cover plus $18–25 drinks | Doors 10–11pm; peak 11:30pm–3am |
| Rooftop / view night | Somewhere Nowhere, Le Bain (Meatpacking edge), Marquee Skydeck at Edge | $60–200 depending on room and season | Golden hour, or 11pm+ for the club version |
| LGBTQ+ night out | The Eagle NYC, Gym Sportsbar, Boxers NYC | No cover at all three; standard bar pricing | Gym and Boxers from 4pm; The Eagle from 10pm |
| Cheap, casual, late | Empire Diner, Los Tacos No. 1 (before 10pm) | $15–35 | Los Tacos to 10pm; Empire Diner to 11pm |
Prices are typical ranges, not quotes. Cover at the club rooms floats with the DJ and the night.
The gallery district after dark
Chelsea's art district is the one thing here that no other nightlife neighborhood in New York has, and almost nobody plans around it. Roughly 200 galleries occupy the blocks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues from the high teens up to the high 20s. Standard hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm — but on Thursdays the district stays open until 8pm for opening receptions, which are free to walk into and usually pouring free wine. Gladstone Gallery, for example, publishes Tuesday–Saturday 10am–6pm with Thursdays until 8pm. That is a genuinely good, genuinely free first act for a Chelsea night, and it puts you within a few blocks of the neighborhood's best bars at exactly the hour they get going.
Two honest caveats. Most Chelsea galleries close for the summer from late July through August, so a Thursday gallery crawl in early August will find a lot of locked doors — the season restarts in September. And this is a district that reads as deserted after 8pm: wide streets, closed roll-down gates, very little foot traffic. It is not unsafe so much as unhelpful if your plan collapses and you need somewhere to duck into.
Where to drink in the gallery blocks
Porchlight (271 11th Ave, at West 28th) is the one true West Chelsea bar — a Union Square Hospitality Group room open since 2015, Southern-leaning drinks, no cover, live music some nights. Official hours are Sunday 3–10pm, Monday–Wednesday to midnight and Thursday–Saturday to 2am, with happy hour daily 3–7pm. It sits far enough west that it is quiet when the rest of Chelsea is not, and it is a five-minute walk from Marquee if you are pre-gaming a club night.
Bathtub Gin (132 Ninth Ave) is the neighborhood's speakeasy, hidden behind a coffee shop, with nightly burlesque, jazz and DJ programming and a copper bathtub in the middle of the room. It is a real cocktail bar wearing a costume — reservations are strongly advised, and the earlier you go the quieter the room. Cocktails run in the high teens (reported); confirm on the current menu.
The Tippler is in the cellar directly beneath Chelsea Market at 425 West 15th Street, built out with reclaimed wood from a water tower and salvaged High Line rails. Chelsea Market's own directory lists it Sunday–Thursday 4pm–midnight, Friday 4pm–3am and Saturday 3pm–3am — which makes it one of the few places in this part of Chelsea that is still meaningfully open at 2am. That 3am close is the most useful fact on this page for anyone building a late Chelsea night that is not a club night.
The club lane: Marquee and the rooftops
Marquee New York (289 Tenth Ave at West 27th) is the anchor and the reason people cross town for Chelsea. Tao Group relaunched it in September 2025 after a full renovation, and it now runs Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11pm to 4am, 21+ with original photo ID. Wednesdays are open-format and lean local and industry; Fridays and Saturdays are mostly commercial house, depending on the booking. Cover is typically reported around $30–70 by night and DJ — Tao publishes exact pricing per event on its own ticket pages rather than a flat rate, so buy ahead. VIP table minimums are not published officially; third-party quotes around $1,500+ are unverified. Full detail on the door: our Marquee venue fact page.
PHD Rooftop Lounge (355 West 16th St, 12th floor of the Dream Downtown) is the bottle-service rooftop: Wednesday–Saturday, 10pm–4am, retractable canopy, Top-40 and hip-hop. GA cover is reported from about $50 and there is a heavy promoter and guest-list culture around the door — Tao does not publish pricing here either. Reviews consistently flag steep covers and a selective door, so go with a table, a promoter contact, or a plan B.
Somewhere Nowhere (112 West 25th St, atop the Renaissance New York Chelsea) is the two-level indoor lounge plus rooftop pool on the 38th and 39th floors — the rare Manhattan venue that is a daytime pool club and a nightclub in the same building. Pool admission is listed from $75; nightlife cover is listed at $30+ with a $100–150+ bar-tab minimum (third-party reservation listings — confirm at booking).
Two rooms just outside Chelsea proper that belong in any honest Chelsea plan. Le Bain, the penthouse of The Standard, High Line, is a ten-minute walk south into Meatpacking: Wednesday–Friday 4pm–4am, Saturday 2pm–4am, no cover for standing room, serious DJ bookings, and a discretionary door that gets harder as the night runs on. And Tao's Marquee Skydeck at Edge is a seasonal pop-up club 100 storeys up at Hudson Yards, running select nights May through October with doors at 11pm and last call at 2am — a genuinely different product from the street-level rooms, and priced like an attraction rather than a nightclub. Check the current calendar before planning around it, because it does not run every week.
The 10pm problem: High Line, Chelsea Market and the evening handoff
The two things visitors most want to do in Chelsea both close at 10pm, and this trips up more evenings than any door policy does. The High Line is open 7am–10pm from April 1 through November 30, and 7am–8pm from December 1 through March 31. Chelsea Market's building hours are 7am–10pm daily, with individual vendors setting their own closing times inside that — Los Tacos No. 1, the market's most reliable cheap eat, runs 11am–10pm.
So the workable sequence is: walk the High Line north from Gansevoort in the last hour of daylight, drop into Chelsea Market for tacos, and be sitting in a bar by 10pm — The Tippler is literally in the same building's cellar, which is why it is the cleanest handoff in the neighborhood. If you want a longer dinner instead, Cookshop (156 Tenth Ave, dinner Monday–Saturday 5:30–11pm, Sunday to 10pm) sits directly under the High Line and takes walk-ins alongside its Resy bookings. Buddakan (75 Ninth Ave, in the Chelsea Market building) runs to midnight Friday and Saturday and is still the neighborhood's big-room theatrical dinner. Shukette (230 Ninth Ave, Monday–Saturday 5–11pm, Sunday 4–10pm) is the harder reservation and the better food. And Empire Diner (210 Tenth Ave, open daily 9am–11pm) has been the neighborhood's landmark diner since 1976 — but note it is an 11pm close, not the 24-hour diner people assume.
Gay Chelsea: the history, and what is actually left
For roughly two decades Chelsea was the centre of gay nightlife in New York. The Roxy on West 18th Street was the Saturday-night institution; Splash, opened on West 17th in 1991, was the everyday one, famous for dancers in translucent shower stalls. Both are gone: The Roxy closed in 2007 and the building was demolished for condos, and Splash closed in 2013 — its disco ball was bought by another bar for about $50 and still hangs over a different dance floor. G Lounge closed after 20 years. Most recently, Barracuda Lounge on West 22nd, home of the city's longest-running bar drag show, shut in March 2025 after damage from a demolition project next door.
The shorthand explanation is that the community moved — to Hell's Kitchen, to the East Village, and to Brooklyn — as Chelsea's rents rose. That is broadly true, and it means the honest answer to "where are the gay bars in Chelsea" is: fewer than the guidebooks say, but not none.
Three are open and easy to verify. The Eagle NYC (554 West 28th St) has been a fixture of leather and fetish nightlife since 1970 and at this address since 2001 — three floors plus a roof deck, listed Monday–Saturday 10pm–4am and Sunday 5pm–4am. Gym Sportsbar (167 Eighth Ave) is the city's original gay sports bar, open from 4pm on weekdays and 1pm on weekends, to 2am Sunday–Thursday and 4am Friday–Saturday. Boxers NYC (37 West 20th St, on the Chelsea/Flatiron line) runs the same shape of hours with a rooftop terrace in summer, drag shows and viewing parties. None of the three charges a cover. For a denser night, the honest advice is to go north: see the Hell's Kitchen nightlife guide, where the Ninth Avenue strip absorbed most of what Chelsea lost.
The honest downsides
- Bar density is genuinely thin. West of Tenth Avenue there is no crawl. If Marquee's line is 45 minutes and you did not buy a ticket, there is no good second option within two blocks. Build the fallback before you leave, not at the door.
- The club rooms are expensive and the pricing is opaque. Tao does not publish cover or table minimums for Marquee or PHD. Everything you read as a firm number — including on this page — is a third-party estimate. Buy tickets from the venue's own event page and treat quoted table minimums as unconfirmed until the venue confirms them in writing.
- Peak arrival is the worst arrival. 11:30pm to 12:30am is when the doors are longest and pickiest. Arrive before 11pm or pre-book. Groups of men without a table convert worst of all.
- The 10pm cliff. High Line, Chelsea Market and most galleries are done by 10pm, and the club lane does not start until 11pm. That hour of dead air ruins plans that did not account for it.
- Transit is worse than the map suggests. Far West Chelsea is thin on subway. Marquee's nearest 24-hour options are the 7 at 34th St–Hudson Yards (about ten minutes' walk), the C/E at 23rd St and the 1 at 28th St. At 4am most of the room is competing for the same cars — walking a block east of the door cuts the surge scrum. Plan the way home with the late-night subway route tool.
- Stale listings, Chelsea edition. If a guide you are reading still sends you to the Rubin Museum for an evening in Chelsea, it is out of date — the museum closed its West 17th Street building on 6 October 2024 after 20 years and now operates without a physical New York home. Same test for Barracuda Lounge (closed March 2025), Splash (2013) and The Roxy (2007). Nearby, Up&Down in Meatpacking (244 West 14th St) is closed as of 2026, and the old Brooklyn Mirage no longer exists under that name — the site relaunched as Pacha New York in June 2026. A list that names any of these as open was not checked this year.

FAQ
Is Chelsea good for nightlife?
Yes, but for two specific things rather than a bar crawl: destination cocktail rooms in the gallery blocks west of Ninth Avenue, and Manhattan's big-room club lane — Marquee, PHD Rooftop and Somewhere Nowhere. What Chelsea does not have is the wall-to-wall bar density of the East Village or Lower East Side. Plan two or three deliberate stops, not eight.
How much does a night out in Chelsea cost?
A cocktail-bar night runs roughly $70–130 per person: no cover at Bathtub Gin, The Tippler or Porchlight, with cocktails in the high teens to low twenties. A club night runs $150–300+: Marquee cover is reported around $30–70 depending on the DJ, PHD Rooftop's GA cover is reported from about $50, and Somewhere Nowhere lists a $30+ cover with a $100–150 bar-tab minimum. Table minimums at the Tao rooms are not published — confirm when you book.
What time does Chelsea Market close?
Chelsea Market's building hours are 7am–10pm daily, and individual vendors set their own hours inside that window — Los Tacos No. 1 runs 11am–10pm. The High Line above it closes at 10pm from April 1 to November 30 and 8pm from December 1 to March 31. Both are early-evening attractions, so treat 10pm as the moment your night has to move indoors.
Is Chelsea still a gay neighborhood?
Historically yes, currently much less so. Chelsea was the centre of gay New York through the 1990s and 2000s, but The Roxy closed in 2007, Splash closed in 2013, and Barracuda Lounge — home of the city's longest-running bar drag show — shut in March 2025 after construction damage next door. The Eagle NYC, Gym Sportsbar and Boxers NYC are all still operating, but the nightly centre of gravity moved north to Hell's Kitchen.
What is the dress code for Chelsea clubs?
Upscale and enforced at the big rooms even where it is not published. Tao does not post a written code for Marquee, but the door is selective in practice — collared shirt and real shoes is the safe floor, and sneakers, athletic wear, shorts and hats are the standard rejections. The cocktail bars do not care: Bathtub Gin, The Tippler and Porchlight have no published dress codes.
Check a specific room with the NYC dress code checker.
